MoMA PS1 Pavilion Model

2012

This radical pavilion competition entry proposed an iconic construction of scaffolding and spiky fabric appendages, which would be capable of filtering pollution from the surrounding neighborhood. A believable scale model was essential in convincing the competition judges of its constructability. The miniature scaffolding was constructed from polystyrene strips, with each section assembled flat using a jig for greater speed and accuracy and then aggregated into the superstructure. The spikes were fashioned individually from foam insulation board. A hot wire cutter was used to carve the numerous compound angles, and the pieces were coated in blue plasti-dip and threaded into the grid structure. The project was later constructed at full-scale in the courtyard of MoMA PS1, and the model was displayed at the MoMA in Manhattan.
